Whenever there is a typhoon, earthquake, or disaster, we often hear the term “State of Calamity.” But what is it, how is it different from the state of emergency in Australia, and how can we get help from the government?

Key Points
  • According to Republic Act 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, a state of calamity is a formal declaration by the President or local government, depending on the extent of the damage — it can be a barangay, city, province, or the entire country.
  • In Australia, the equivalent of a state of calamity is called a State of Emergency or sometimes a State of Disaster, depending on the state or territory
  • Recently, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a one-year State of National Calamity in the Philippines after the devastation of Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi).
