Athena Thebus has for the past two years moved between Los Angeles, Brisbane and Sydney. She attributes her sense of belonging in Sydney to the community of Filipino, queer and artists of colour that "speaks her language". Image: Athena Thebus (J. Atienza)
She relates this conversation as one that relates to "queerness, resisting whiteness, and colonisation".
Her work responds to her ideas and thoughts around those issues that are both biographical and part of a greater societal context. Her most recent exhibition, "Athena in Thorns" at Firstdraft in Sydney, reflects notions of femininity, queer life and her identity as a non-cisgender woman.
