Age was no barrier for a group of Filipino seniors in Sydney who took to the stage to dance, perform and showcase their style, while highlighting the importance of staying active and socially connected later in life.
Key Points
- The Seniors Got Talent event, held on 12 July in Burwood, NSW, brought together older members of the Filipino-Australian community for an afternoon of performances and entertainment.
- Among the participants was 94-year-old Rosalinda Ilagan, who performed the cha-cha and demonstrated that getting older does not necessarily mean stepping away from the activities that bring joy.
- According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, social isolation and loneliness can affect health and wellbeing, and older Australians may experience changes such as retirement, bereavement, declining health or reduced mobility that can affect their social networks.
- For participants Lee Meekan and Leticia Aguilar, who spoke to SBS Filipino, taking to the stage was about more than entertainment. It was an opportunity to stay active, build social connections and remain engaged in community life.
