The Australian federal election season has begun and you might be wondering how to have your say at the polls. Voting 101 from SBS News will be taking you through where and when to vote, how to vote, and what it is exactly that you're voting for

  • Preferential voting system is a key feature of the Australian electoral process.
  • The Federal Parliament is made up of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. In this election, your votes will help elect all 150 members of the House of Representatives as well as 40 of the 76 members of the Senate.
  • If you're not sure who your local candidates are or you'd like to use their practice voting tool you can also visit the A-E-C website at aec.gov.au.
