For many migrants, culture travels through sound and taste. Music becomes a reminder of home, while food carries memories of family, celebrations and everyday life. In South Australia, a community festival brings these elements together, not only as a celebration, but as a reflection of the Filipino migrant experience in Australia.

Key Points
  • The Filipino Music & Food Festival – Australia 2026 in Adelaide has been postponed after the City of Tea Tree Gully deemed the venue unsafe due to heavy rainfall.
  • Organiser and co-founder Connie Valeza says the festival is a way to share Filipino identity through food, music and storytelling, while helping younger generations connect with their heritage.
  • Valeza says with the theme “A Tribute to All Filipino Migrants who came to Australia to Build a Better Life,” the festival reflects the journeys of many who migrated in search of opportunity and now contribute to Australia’s diverse society.
  • Grounded in bayanihan, the Filipino value of collective effort and community cooperation, Veleza says the festival brings together volunteers and Filipino organisations across South Australia to make the event possible.

spk_2

The best thing of this event is the team. The team is a tribute to all Filipino migrants who came to Australia to build a better life. So it's really like a good motivation to everyone to unite us in one day, sama-sama tayo mag-celebrate tayo sa isang araw na puno ng musika at, you know, pagkain. To we were thinking before like,

spk_2

ah with my co-founder, um how are we going to, you know, to ah

spk_2

unite everyone. Most Filipino they like food, number one food, and then music, right? So that's why na nabuhi yung event na yan. And puro volunteers lang tayo dito. This is a free community event. This is with the support of all the food vendors. We are all volunteers here. All the people involved in this event are volunteers.

spk_1

bayanihan po talaga ano angin

spk_2

that's that's the word you're correct, it's bayanihan spirit. hmm hmm

spk_1

spk_2

It's like, you know, food and music brings back memories with me, you know, and for many Filipinos here in Australia, because when you hear an OM song, right, or a taste of familiar dish,

spk_2

it's instantly brings you a home, right? Even if you're far away, and it's like a big emotional because it reminds you of family, celebrations, and even simple moments growing up with that culture. So through food and music, we don't lose who we are. We carry our culture with us, and we continue to share it, even in different countries here in Australia.

spk_2

on the day, people can expect live music, we have solo performers, acoustic and trio performers, we have dancers, and most especially, of course, the Filipino food.

spk_2

And um it's more of like a community activities. We have what we known all of ano maraming Pilipino, alam na alam nila ano yung karaoke for all so meron tayong karaoke ah beach, and also after the Filipino Got Talent, we have ah disco sa plaza. This is very known in Philippines.

spk_2

during fiesta, meron tayong disco sa plaza, so that will end the the day, a disco or dance for all, we have a DJ as well, Filipino DJ. We also have em local Filipino businesses, so other than food, we also have non-food businesses. Also we have cultural performers, showcasing their talents and um

spk_2

And also I have co-founder, he is, he is the one in charge with the, you know, with the production and so lahat ng creativity, ano yung ano yung mga dapat nating gawin para maging successful he is behind of that production and creativity of Daven. We have the support from

spk_2

other Filipino community organizations it's actually like an initial collaboration with them, so hopefully you know tuloy-tuloy na to taon taon.

spk_1

spk_2

Exactly. This is actually very important. This is for them as well. The second generation Filipinos didn't grow up in the Philippines. So the festivals like this become their way of experiencing their roots firsthand. So instead of just hearing stories, they get to see, taste and feel the culture for food, music, you know, language and community, we have ah in the opening program, we have the Filipino ethnic.

spk_2

school, right? So, that school is really helping, you know, may mga may mga kabataan na dito na they're born here. So that school is helping them to, you know, to learn to speak Tagalog and, you know, and learn our Filipino culture, even if they grew up here in Australia. So, it helps them understand where their parents come from, and at the same time, it gives them a sense of identity and pride in being.

spk_2

Filipino.

spk_1

And alam ko para sa mga katulad niyo na nago organize hindi ganon kadali syempre yung oras niyo yung yung time and effort talagang nabubuhos dun pero ah ikaw personally ano yung nagtutulak sayo para tuloy-tuloy na gawin to? ano

spk_2

na to passion ko na to em because I used to be a volunteer in Philippines. What motivates me is yung yung inspirasyon.

spk_2

ko before sa Pilipinas. I did this, you know, in Philippines. I was very active in Philippines in social social civic events. I'm involved with, you know, different outreach programs. So, nung nandito na ako sa Australia, merong motivation na because nakikita ko nakikita ko I've been to different festivals and events. kailangan lang natin i highlight yung music and food, though ginagawa na rin ito ng iba, but it's gonna be like,

spk_2

uniting all of them, you know, kasi may may kanya kanya silang, let's say there are diverse organization, but this opportunity is open for all of them to support and join.

spk_1

ano yung nakikita niyo na support na pwede pang ibigay sa inyo ng community to keep this going every year?

spk_2

em isa lang nakikita ko tuloy-tuloy lang natin mag- attend lang sila, they just need to join and enjoy the day, that's the best support they can do.

spk_2

I can never, I cannot you know ask for more, but just for them to attend and join us and celebrate the day, you know magsaya tayo sa araw na yan, yun lang eh suportahan nila taon taon,

spk_1

spk_2

okay so festivals like ah this allow people or allow us to see who we truly are, not just a migrant or workers here.

spk_2

but as a community with rich culture, talent, and values. So when people attend this event, they will experience our hospitality, our creativity, and our passion. And it helps build understanding, respect and appreciation, and that's very important in a multicultural country like Australia.
