For Australian politics in 2025, it was a year of predictable policies - and shock results. That included the May election that saw Labor win back government in a landslide, and two separate opposition party leaders - Peter Dutton and Adam Bandt lose their seats.

Key Points
  • In the Australian federal politics, national security is how the year 2025 began with the revival of accusations that Australia's intelligence agencies had bugged the cabinet room of Timor-Leste's government, allegedly seeking information as the Timor Sea Treaty was being negotiated.
  • The federal elections was called in May with Labor staying in government and gaining a record number of seats.
  • The government introduce a 20 percent cut on HECS debts as the new Parliament's first order of business and few changes to the aged care rules. Albanese government has been active in the world stage too with focus on talks about climate change, US tariffs and diplomatic relations.
  • 2025 ended with a focus on national security as at least 15 people were gunned down in a terror attack at Sydney's Bondi Beach in December, as they attended a Hanukkah celebration.
