Since 2017, more than a million Uighurs are thought to have been locked up in camps in Xinjiang - camps which China's government says are "voluntary" and used to counter extremism. Evidence has also grown of Uighurs being transferred to forced labour factories; a Washington-based research centre found more than 570,000 people in the region were sent to pick cotton under what they call a coercive labour program. Independent senator Rex Patrick recently introduced a new bill to the federal parliament he hopes will take some action on the issue.
