While most countries did not suggest new emission goals at the two-day event, leaders do want to minimise global warming to one point five degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. One of the big polluters, the United States plans to reduce its emissions by 50 cent, targeting power plants, cars and other sectors. Federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says Australia has to get its act together and in the lead up to the Glasgow conference later this year, there will be real pressure on Australia to lift its game and show that it is serious about tackling climate change.

Environmental campaigners have criticised Australia's lack of response to the climate emergency after the staging of a big global summit. At the US-initiated virtual talks, Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison didn't make any new promises, disappointing activists and his political opponents.
