European countries are tightening their coronavirus restrictions as the World Health Organisation warns now is a critical moment for action. Lockdowns and curfews are being imposed in a desperate bid to bring case numbers down.
The Executive Director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Program, Doctor Michael Ryan, says European nations are having to turn to measures such as lockdowns because there are limited options when case numbers are so high. The WHO's Maria Van Kerkhove says some parts of Europe and the United States are facing multiple, simultaneous challenges which threaten to overwhelm their health systems.
