Medicare has emerged as a crucial issue in the 2022 federal election campaign, as the major party leaders play down gaffes and reported gaps in policy. The Medicate debate returned to the spotlight as Anne Ruston was named as the next health minister if the Coalition is re-elected next month.

Easter Sunday was not supposed to be a day for the usual election campaigning.  But press conferences and announcements went ahead. The press conference was focussed on the makeup of Scott Morrison's cabinet if the Coalition wins the May election.  The naming of Anne Ruston to the health portfolio has raised some immediate questions over her past comments about Medicare.  She once described spending on Medicare as unsustainable - and under questioning from reporters, she denied that Australians can expect to see cuts to services.
