A parliamentary inquiry has painted a bleak future for Australia's iconic koala unless there's urgent intervention to stop the destruction of habitat. It's found the population in New South Wales faces extinction within 30 years.

They were already threatened by climate change, drought and land clearing when thousands were wiped out in the summer bushfires. While bushfires are no longer an immediate threat to koalas in New South Wales, experts say their fight for survival continues. The year-long cross-party inquiry found koala populations were already in steep decline before the bushfires hit.
