As extended lockdowns had Australians looking for creative ways to socialise and keep fit, Victoria saw a surging interest in one of society's oldest forms of transport - not quite horses but bicycles.

Now, authorities are urging the cycling trend to continue for its health, economic, and social rewards. The Victorian government is responding to this surge in the cycling trend and the state, investing heavily in new infrastructure such as  in 100 kilometres of separated cycle lanes and new bike trails. According to the cycling organisation WeRide Australia,  exercise and fitness is the most common reason to ride a bike at 82 per cent, while 41 per cent use their bike as their main mode of transport for work, school or shopping.
