New study suggests paracetamol not as effective a painkiller as has been thought

It’s the most popular pain-killer in the world. Paracetamol accounts for over 60 per cent of analgesic sales in Australia and it probably also is our number one selling medication,


But new research suggests it may be ineffective in reducing pain for many common conditions. Dr Christina Abdel Shaheed, from the University of Sydney, trialled the pain relief against 44 ailments, finding conclusive evidence it had an effect in only four.
