The prime minister's resignation followed a defeat in the long political battle over  the social and healthcare system reform. Presiden Ninistö asked the government to continue in caretaker mode until the election.

The Estonian workforce in Finland has started to move back to Estonia, one of the reasons is the stress of continually travelling between Estonia and Finland. Currently more people are moving from Finland to Estonia than the other way around. This trend has not bee seen for fifteen years.
