Some Nationals politicians are pushing for a greater focus on coal while moderate Liberals are calling for stronger action on climate change.


Phasing out coal-fired power is considered critical to limiting global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.  Australia’s reluctance to reduce thermal coal output also stands in contrast to other developed economies such as Germany, France, Britain and Spain -- each of whom have already pledged to phase out coal by 2038 at the latest
