WA leads the way on women's sheds

Isabelle gets some woodworking tips

Older Australian women are increasingly at risk of isolation, and many are joining women’s sheds – to learn new skills and make new friends. With more than one-thousand MEN'S sheds across Australia it is a welcome trend.

The 72 year old Isabelle McLellan may be retired... but she’s not slowing down - she’s skilling up. She worked as a nurse for 50 years. Wanting to keep busy, she’s become an active member of Western Australia’s first Women’s Shed - though it’s not technically a shed - just a space in a Perth community hall. But it’s a start.  Here women can learn woodwork, arts, crafts - and prepare important legal documents like wills and power of attorney.
