French working holiday makers on the rise in Australia

After two years where the numbers of French people on Working Holiday Visas was decreasing, it seems that Australia is becoming popular again.

22 361 French people were given a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) for the year 2016-2017, a 3,8% hike compared to the previous year. 2470 Belgians and only 8 Luxembourgians also got the visa.

English are still number one on the list, with 40 382 having received the WHS. They are followed by Germany (25 704), South Korea (22 412) and France.

What about the backpacker tax?

Despite French working holiday makers being on the rise, the total number of people with a WHV went down 2% compared to last year. It's still less than expected. The new backpack tax, a 15% tax on the salary of backpackers which was installed on 1 January, didn't seem to have a great impact.
