KFC used as bait to catch feral cats in Australian parks

Earlier this week, Victoria’s environment minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced an audit of Parks Victoria employees' expenses, since several strange transactions were noticed, including jewellery, electronics and KFC.

But this $260 spent on fried chicken is not as suspect as it seems, since the chicken was used to bait feral cats!

Why KFC ?

The delicious (and strong!) aroma of KFC, coupled with its longevity, makes it the perfect bait to catch feral cats. Several experts interview by The Guardian confirmed it.

Feral cat have cause the extinction of 20 animal species and are threatening more than 100 at the moment. The KFC was used to catch feral cats on French Island, south-east of Melbourne.

This tweet from Gregory Andrews, Australia's Threatened Species Commissioner, seems to confirm that KFC is indeed used as bait.

For the jewellery, bikes and spa day found amongst the employees' expenses, this is another story. Though we like to imagine feral cats covered in diamonds munching on a piece of fried chicken before their spa date...
