Long live France's tradition of throwing food at politicians

What's cooking? Christophe Mallet from SBS's French Radio takes a satirical look at how everything is about food in France - even politics.

There is an odd tradition in France of throwing your cooking or baking ingredients at politicians. Let me explain.

1. Eggs

While visiting Brittany on the last leg of her campaign, Marine Le Pen was 'welcomed' by fifty anti-FN (National Front) militants with eggs, and chants of: 'Out the fascists' and 'You have nothing to do here.'

Protected by her security team, Marine Le Pen immediately found safety in a nearby business.

Mind you, her opponent, Emmanuel Macron got the same treatment in 2016 when as a minister he visited a post office in Montreuil (near Paris).

2. Flour

Earlier in the campaign, it was Conservative candidate Francois Fillon who was greeted with another important ingredient - flour.

Francois Hollande however wasn't new to the flour treatment, having being the subject of it in 2012.

3. Cream

In 2007, while campaigning for the presidential election, Nicolas Sarkozy was thrown cream (tarte-a-la-creme) in front of journalists while heading into a meeting.

Something that also happened to Alain Juppe in 2003.

And Jean Pierre Chevenement in 2002.

4. Other

2002 was the year 'The Ketchup' (tomato sauce) was introduced, and the unfortunate recipient of the condiment was the then Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.

Here you go, maybe this another example why France is a country of 'foodies.'
