Nightmare in the Kimberley: Two men sleep on their car's roof to escape crocodiles

In horror, two terrified men were trapped for days in crocodile-infested waters in one of Australia's most remote areas.

Already lacking drinking water, the nightmare just began when they are forced to sleep on the roof of their car for four nights after a crocodile has taken a closer look at their situation.

It's the fourth time this month that motorists need to be rescued in this remote area of Kimberley.

The men, accompanied by their dog, were on a fishing trip in the north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula last weekend when their four-wheel-drive was stuck in the muddy waters on Friday.

Not having returned on Monday, the police were alerted and organised a vast land and aerial research, finding the survivors on Tuesday, November 21.

Mark Balfour, Broome's police sergeant, told the ABC that the men were found in distress on the roof of their car.

"Obviously in the Kimberley here you've got to watch the crocs and snakes, and I believe one of the gentlemen said a croc did come close to their vehicle while they were out there, so obviously they were a bit panicky about that," he said.

Sgt. Balfour said the men were traumatized and lacked water when the rescuers found them.

"They were quite happy to see us and obviously quite upset, crying."

"Being out there for five days in this kind of country and with the weather being quite hot, I don't know what would have been going through their heads."

"They were quite fatigued, dehydrated and heat-struck," he told the ABC.

Tides in this region are among the biggest in the world and can reach about nine metres. It's not rare to see tourists and locals being often trapped surrounded by waters.
