Queensland Police were stunned to find a baby koala in the car of a woman they arrested on “outstanding matters” last weekend.

The 50-year-old woman was asked if she had anything to declare during the arrest and handed officers a green backpack with the koala joey.

She insisted she found the animal the night before and that she was looking after it.

The RSPCA have taken the animal into their care. “He’s been on fluids but is doing well and will shortly be going out to a carer,” said RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty.

“He weighs 1.5 kg and we’ve called him Alfred.”
