If you live in Western Australia, keep an eye out : the police is looking for an adventurous quokka who escaped Rottnest Island.

Steve the quokka was last seen on 4 January in a Canning Vale garbage can. He probably left Rootnest Island on board a rubbish barge.

"Steve is described as small, cute and furry. He may use his cuteness to trick unsuspecting humans into giving him food," says the Facebook post from Western Australia Police. Even if the post is quite funny, the police has confirmed that it's true, a quokka did make it to the mainland and the Rottnest Island Authority are trying to locate it.

If you see Steve, call the Department of Parks and Wildlife via their Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055.

A vulnerable species

Quokka are a vulnerable species, meaning their population is decreasing. You can mainly find them on Rottnest Island where they are less exposed to predators than on the continent.

They are quite friendly and often let humans take photos with them. The hashtag #quokkaselfie counts over 10 000 selfies of people with a quokka.
