As a former paratrooper, Jean-Jacques Savin is used to excitement. But even for him, his latest project is pretty out there. He's trying to go across the Atlantic ocean on board a capsule that looks like a barrel.
And the capsule is not powered by an engine. The 71-year-old is relying on ocean currents to bring him across the pond. He left the Spanish Canary Islands on 26 December and is expecting to reach the Caribbean in three months.
His 3m x 2.10m capsule holds a bed, a kitchen and a window to watch marine life. It's made of plywood and epoxy, and has solar panels to help him stay in touch with the outside world.
During his travels, Savin will post markers to help oceanographers study oceanic currents. He'll also take advantage of New Year's Eve and his 72nd birthday (in January) to crack open a bottle of Sauternes and eat a block of foie gras.
