Ο κ. Ντατον σε πρόσφατες δηλώσεις τους είχε αφήσει να εννοηθεί οτι οι λευκοί αγρότες της Νοτιας Αφρικής διώκονται και ότι χρειάζονται την βοήθεια μιας 'πολιτισμένης χώρας' όπως η Αυστραλία.
"I think in this circumstance we do have to look at the persecution taking place. We have a huge South African expat community within Australia, They work hard, they integrate well into Australian society. They contribute and make us a better country and they're the sorts of migrants that we want to bring into our country." είπε ο κ. Dutton.
Ο ίδιος είπε ακόμη ότι εξετάζει την πιθανότητα επιτάχυνσης της μεταναστευτικής διαδικασίας για την συγκεκριμένη ομάδα.
Πως αντέδρασε η Νότια Αφρική
'Εντονη ήταν η αντιδρασή της Νότιας Αφρικής. Η κυβέρνηση εξέφρασε την δυσαρέσκειά της στον 'Υπατο Αρμοστή της Αυστραλίας στην Πρετόρια και ζήτησε να ανακαλέσει τα σχόλιά του ο Πήτερ Ντάτον.
Το γραφείο του κ. Ντάτον διατηρεί την στάση του ' ουδέν σχόλιον', ωστόσο ο αναπληρωτής πρωθυπουργος Michael McCormack υποστήριξε ότι ο υπουργός προέβει στα σχόλια περί καταδίωξης των λευκών αγροτών στην Νότια Αφρική καλή τη πίστη.
"I appreciate it's a delicate situation there. I think it's a little bit rich (outrageous) to go always asking ministers to retract comments. As I say, he made those comments in good faith and Peter Dutton is doing an outstanding job in the immigration portfolio." είπε ο κ. McCormack.
Ρατσιστικά τα σχόλια Dutton υποστηρίζουν οι Πράσινοι
Οι Πράσινοι κατηγόρησαν τον υπουργό Μετανάστευσης Peter Dutton για ρατσιμό για τα σχόλια στα οποία προέβει.
Με σημερινές του δηλώσεις ο ηγέτης των Πρασίνων Richard Di Natale υποστήριξε ότι τα σχόλια του υπουργού μας πάνε πίσω στην πολιτική της Λευκής Αυστραλίας (White Australia policy):
"Peter Dutton wants to bring back the White Australia policy. According to Peter Dutton, if you're a white South African farmer, you're going to make a great contribution, you won't bludge on welfare, but if you're not white you won't do any of those things. I know there's been a lot of debate at the moment about whether Peter Dutton's comments were racists, well there's no debate as far as I'm concerned, the bloke is an out-and-out racist."
Αντιδράσεις απο οργανώσεις ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων
Η διευθύντρια του Αυστραλιανού Παρατηρητηρίου Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων (Human Rights Watch Australia) Elaine Pearson κατηγόρησε την κυβέρνηση για υποκρισία:
"It's interesting that the Government is so moved by these stories. There does seem to be a racial element there. But, if we look around the world, if we look at what's happening in Syria, in Myanmar, in other places in the world, there are people who really desperately need to find safety and sanctuary."
