The following passage is taken from the documentary's official website:

Trust in the Greek government, police force, and judicial system have been shattered by the actions of previous regimes. Paired with austerity measures forced upon the Greek people and a faltering economy which has to lead to a skyrocketing youth unemployment rate and harsh working conditions, Greek youth across the nation have grown frustrated and angry with their current quality of life.

FREEDOM BESIEGED is a feature-length documentary concerning the current state of the Greek economy and how it has affected the development of the country's youth. The shooting of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos by Greek police in 2008 serves as a springboard launching audiences into the heart of a dwindling national identity amongst many youths who find it increasingly difficult to relate to present-day Greece. Some youth continue to act out violently in protest of the collective 'establishment' while much more remain complacent, introverted, and helpless in the face of this current crisis. What many have in common is a sense of alienation.

Lastly, the film examines the story of a youth development camp in the small, coastal village of "Kiveri" two hours south-west of Athens. Here, local farmer John Karkalatos has used extra-curricular activities for the past sixteen years to provide Greek children ages 3 to 23 with a new-found sense of self-respect, discipline, teamwork, and national pride. The film argues that reigniting these basic values in the youth of the nation via strong leadership from their surrounding community may lead to a generation willing to persevere, re-engage with Greece, and actively seek solutions for a future of prosperity
