Anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Madikizela-Mandela dies

South African anti-apartheid activist and former wife of Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has died aged 81. Once hailed as the mother of the 'new' South Africa, Ms Madikizela-Mandela's reputation was later tarnished legally and politically.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's supporters gathered at dusk outside her home in Soweto, singing and dancing in her honour.

It was an outpouring of emotion and affection for the woman they affectionately call Mama Winnie.
