EU: "Strong despite Brexit, protagonist in climate change policies"

European Union Ambassador to Australia HE Mr Sem Fabrizi was in Melbourne for the official launch of the European KIC program in Australia. It is an initiative that aims to develop innovative scientific, legal, and business models for tackling climate change. He spoke to SBS Greek and Panos Apostolou for the Climate Change policies, the role of Australia, and, of course, Brexit.

Strong commitments

"The European Union is the leader in climate action. We are mainstreaming climate action in all our policies, including on our foreign policy.

We saw Paris Agreement as the point of the depart for the international community. It’s the first universal legal binding agreement for everybody. We are very pleased that Australia is part of this agreement and it took the commitment to reduce emissions by a 26 per cent to 28 per cent for the period 2020 – 2030.  We believe that everybody has to make its own part. Climate change is here and it’s happening".

What makes Australia the best ally for this initiative?

"Firstly, KIC initiative goes hand-to-hand with Australia. KIC means 'Knowledge, Innovation, and Community'. Australia is a knowledge-based society, innovation here is very strong and is the main part of Australian Government’s policies. Also, there are several communities that have shown their support to this initiative. Australia is the perfect place to start KIC outside the European Union".

Will you present this initiate to bigger polluters in nearby Asia, like China or India?

"The copyright is there and Ms Mary Ritter , our International Ambassador for the KIC Europe, will promote this innovative idea around the world".

Will EU become stronger after Brexit?

"The European Union is already strong. 'The Rome Declaration' celebrates the 60th year of the Treaty of Rome and has given a roadmap for EU, for going big on bigger issues and small on smaller issues. We will deliver a stronger economy, making Europe more secure, implementing defence and migration policies, and promoting a social Europe".
