Tempers flared in the Greek Parliament as the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras exchanged heated words with the leader of the New Democracy party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The topics that were raised during the exchange between the two political figures were the way of electing the President of Greece, the issue of private universities and the environment.

According to Tsipras, Mr Mitstotakis’s goal is to enforce his will, should he form a government. He also suggested that Mr Mitsotakis is not in favour of re-electing Prokopis Pavlopoulos for a new term as president.

In reply, Mr Mitsotakis said that Mr Tsipras is using the debate around the constitutional review as a way to manage a possible defeat in the general elections.

The two also clashed on the subjects of private universities and the Environment. Mr Mitsotakis proposed to the Prime Minister that him and his party would vote for two articles of the constitution that SYRIZA (Mr Tsipras’s party) wants to revise, if SYRIZA in turn voted for articles 16 and 24. Articles that deal with education and the protection of the environment.

The Greek Prime Minister declined the offer.

The voting is expected to start today.
