The residents of the Opal Tower in Homebush are slowly returning to their homes. The Tower was evacuated on Monday afternoon, after Fire and Rescue NSW got calls about jammed doors and crumbling noises inside the building.  According to the police, the building moved 1-2 millimetres.

The majority of the building has been declared safe, barring 51 units that are deemed dangerous. Fire and Rescue superintendent Andrew Dewberry says there is no risk of the building collapsing.

«No, there is no risk that the building can collapse. It's just the local structure has been compromised. What will happen now is the strata manager will work with the local engineers to determine what needs to be done to actually make this building safe and let the full occupancy reoccur».

The tenants of the 51 unsafe units have found lodging with the help of Fire and Rescue or with friends and relatives.
