Indonesia: Death toll keeps climbing

The death toll in Indonesia has climbed to over 220 while the injured exceed 800. As rescue crews race against the clock, there are fears that the number of victims will climb even higher.

The tsunami has devastated homes and other properties in the islands of Iowa and Sumatra.

According to geology and natural disasters professor from the Athens Kapodistreian University, Efthymios Lekas, there was no warning and even if there had been, it would have made little difference.

Indonesia is home to over 17.000 islands and sits on the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Basin. A part of the Earth that is dominated by frequent earthquakes and volcano explosions.
