Australia reached the knockout phase of the Asian Cup with a hard-earned 3-2 victory in Al Ain against Syria, that gave them second spot in Group B behind Jordan.

They now meet Japan or Uzbekistan in the round of 16 on Tuesday morning (AEDT).

Australia had earlier twice taken the lead over the Syrians through Awer Mabil and Chris Ikonomidis but were pegged back by strikes from Syria's big guns Omar Kharbin and Omar Al-Soma.

After repelling multiple Syrian attacks, Rogic's classy finish in the 93rd minute settled the match.
