"I am asking you to pray so that I will be worthy of this great obligation and responsibility that the Ecumenical Patriarchate has assigned me”, His Eminence said in an interview with SBS Greek.

Mr Makarios pointed out his feelings of love and enthusiasm towards Australia’s Greek community.

He also told SBS Greek that he isn’t coming to Australia to start a new career. "I am coming humbly to serve Australia’s people".

Theology and Science

The new Archbishop believes that the values of Theology and Science are in accordance and can be combined.

"I think it is a blessed combination because the Church should have a say on scientific matters and Science relies on the voice of our Church."

He stressed that if the Church wants to be heard, “the clergy should get out of their sofas and abandon the comfort though, that we live in a theological world.”

Archbishop Makarios also referred to the need for dialogue with the scientists: "If the clergy isn’t involved with the scientists, then we cannot have any dialogue.”

Archdiocese’s administrative structure

Regarding the Church's administrative affairs, Archbishop Makarios said he wants to have a thorough review of the administrative structure of the Archdiocese once he arrives in Australia and officially assumes his duties.

"I cannot set priorities when I am not fully aware of the issues," his Eminence told SBS Greek.

He underlined the fact that at the official briefing from the Holy Synod and the Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomew, “there was a discussion about Australia’s Archdiocese, but no decision was ever taken."
