Mass shooting in Texas 'largest ever' in the state: governor

At least 26 people have died after a lone gunman opened fire on churchgoers in southeast Texas.

The shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, 65 kilometres east of San Antonio, during its mid-morning Sunday service.

The assailant, believed to be a 26 year-old white male, was found dead from a bullet wound in his car a short distance away.

Reports indicate a number of children are among those killed, including the 14 year-old daughter of one of the church's pastors.
