Nauru is 'pleasant island': Tony Abbott

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has come out in defence of the government's decision to leave children and families on Nauru, saying the island is 'very pleasant' and 'no hell-hole'.

Mr Abbott's remarks came in defence of the government's contentious decision to leave children in Australia's off-shore detention centre on the island.

Reports of the deteriorating mental health of asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island became a key topic in the recent Wentworth by-election and has reignited debate over the issue.
