Patients set to face rising health costs

The Australian Medical Association has blamed the government's Medicare rebate freeze for its recommendation that GPs lift fees for a standard consultation by $2 to $78 from November.

The health department on Wednesday confirmed the government still intended to freeze Medicare rebates until 2020.

The federal government maintains that bulk-billing of GP services is at an all-time high of 85.1 per cent.
