"Speak Greek in March": Supporting the Greek language throughout the year

The initiative that started in 2015 by individuals and representatives of literary and cultural organisations within the Greek community is on this year too. This March, the SBS Greek Program is launching a daily radio segment and is "travelling" in 31 countries worldwide re-discovering one of the world's oldest languages.

The “Speak Greek in March” (SGM) campaign was conceived to encourage the learning of Greek in the Hellenic diaspora, ad to promote the Greek language as one of the most ancient and richest languages in the world.

The SGM campaign aims to stimulate the Greek community, the school system and government to give greater priority to the speaking, learning and teaching of the Greek language.

The organising Committee’s policy is to encourage the various stakeholders to initiate, develop and implement activities appropriate to their own fields of endeavour, which promote the Greek language.

For example, schools which teach Greek may organise during March (but also throughout the year) competitions, celebrations, debates lectures and special projects related to the Greek language.

While the campaign originated in Melbourne, it is quickly spreading to other parts of Australia and overseas. The aspiration of the organising Committee is that the campaign is embraced by the Hellenic Diaspora, but also by other minority communities in Australia.

The convener of the "Speak Greek in March" Committee Mike Zafiropoulos talks to SBS Greek and Themi Kallos for the importance of the initiative and this year's projects.
