A resourceful resident of a village in Rhodes island, Greece, has garnered social media attention for “inventing” his own way to move around flooded streets: canoeing!

The young man posted the video on YouTube capturing a short ride on what looks like a residential street.

The video was widely circulated in Greece – and elsewhere – surpassing 17,000 views within a couple of days.

Passers-by can be heard laughing amused by the man’s initiative, while a woman is heard cracking a joke about the place being like Venice.

Rhodes was hit by heavy rainfall on Saturday which led to overflowing rivers and localised flooding in several areas.
Combined with strong winds, extreme weather events affected sea and air traffic too, causing cancellations and delays for ferries and flights.

An airplane reaching the island, was made to return to Athens, following unsuccessful attempts to land at Rhodes international airport “Diagoras”.
