What does Catalonia’s independence mean for Spain, Europe and West Thrace?

The bloodshed and violent scenes of Sunday's independence vote in Catalonia will leave a deep scar on Spain. And they make it more likely – though far, far from certain – that a new country will be born.

Andreas Banoutsos, founder and chairman of the Center for International Strategic Analysis in Athens (KEDISA), spoke to Stergos Kastelloriou, analyzing the reasons why Catalonia wants its independence, but also its impact on Spain, Europe and west Thrace.

What do I need to know about Catalonia?

It's a wealthy region in north-eastern Spain which has its own language (Catalan) and culture.

About 7.5 million people live there. Its capital is Barcelona, the second biggest city in Spain.

Barcelona was captured by Philip V of Spain in 1714, which was a step towards the creation of the modern state of Spain, but Catalonia has never lost its separate identity.
