What's the connection between schizophrenia and inflammation?

Our immune system is supposed to serve and protect the human body. But this is not always the case. The immune system works in mysterious ways that can even attack its own host, like in most autoimmune deceases. Australian scientists have been closely monitoring what impact inflammation can have in the brain of patients with schizophrenia and what is the connection between white blood cells and our state of mind. Professor Chris Pantelis scientific director of the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre at the University of Melbourne spoke to SBS radio about their findings.

The research contacted so far through brain imaging has shown significant signs of inflammatory cells that exist in the brains of schizophrenia patients. These inflammatory cells maybe related to some of the changes in the brain. Professor Chris Pantelis and his colleagues are trying to define whether there  are triggering schizophrenia or they are actually a response to the illness.

Professor Chris Pantelis says its a very exciting idea and hypothesis. The answer to it might have important implications on how science treats schizophrenia when people are developing it for the first time or when they relapse.
