Key points
  • Victorian government launches online learner permit test
  • Prospective learners with existing appointment times are prioritized in first trial
  • The online test option is expected to be available to all Vicroads customers from late June
Test elements include theory, interactive videos and visual graphics, and aim to reinforce road safety messages and test candidates’ knowledge on key road safety issues including speed limits and drink and drug driving.

The test is open to an initial group of 500 prospective learner drivers with existing appointments from the Gippsland region, “in recognition of the long distances many regional customers travel to sit the test in-person.”

Following the first ‘batch’ of candidates, the online test will be available to 1,000 applicants weekly from early May, also within the cohort of booked test appointments.
From late June, all Vicroads customers will be able to access the online test.

To address the backlog of tests due to coronavirus lockdown measures, nine extra temporary licence testing locations opened up in the state.

More than 107,000 drive tests and computerised assessments have been completed since September.
