Marine researchers have discovered a sea creature that is longer than 3 whales.

The creature was discovered in underwater canyons at Ningaloo Coast, 12,000 kilometres off the coast of Perth. It's actual length is yet to be determined, but the researches estimate it exceeds 44 meters.

The huge siphonophore Apolemia - a gelatinous floating colony of thousands of tiny individual bodies strung together - was but one of many discoveries the month-long expedition discovered in the canyons.

"We suspected these deep sea areas would be diverse but we have been blown away by the significance of what we have seen," said Chief Scientist Dr Nerida Wilson.
