Five workers were critically injured and flown to Brisbane for hospitalisation

Queensland Mines Minister Anthony Lynham has sought expert advice on establishing a separate inquiry on safety issues broadly in the industry.

The explosion took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Anglo American's Grosvenor coal mine in Moranbah, leaving five workers critically injured.

The workers, in their 40s and 50s, were flown to Brisbane, with four of them having required intubation and ventilation.

"Mines inspectors are already investigating this incident and I expect a full and thorough investigation," Dr Lynham said.

"However, I can also ask an inquiry to look at the broader issue of other instances of sparking, ignition or fire across the industry.

"We want answers to why this event occurred. We demand answers and an appropriate investigation will follow,” Dr Lynham said on Thursday.
