Digital licences are soon to be rolled out across NSW. NSW drivers will soon be able to use their digital licence on their phones like they use Medicare card.

Legislation will be introduced to parliament in the next two weeks to enable the phased state-wide rollout of the digital driver licence – the first of its kind in Australia, NSW Services Minister Victor Dominello said in a statement on Sunday.

The Digital licences will be available soon through Service NSW app. The app can be downloaded on mobile phone and People can use the digital licence as a proof of Identity and for a roadside police check - otherthings.

“Smartphones have become de facto wallets, and we’re using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios,” Mr Dominello said.

NSW Services Minister Victor Dominello said the digital driver licence would be the first of its kind in Australia, more user-friendly and highly secure.

In case of lost or stolen phones, data will be safe. It can’t be retrieved from lost or stolen smartphones because the app is encrypted with the same technology used by banks.

In this regard, the trial began at Dubbo last year.  More than 1400 residents used a digital licence, with an 83 percent customer satisfaction rating.

Drivers who opt-in for the digital service will still be provided with a physical card but won’t be required to carry it with them.

Is this a good move?

Mr Navneet Mittal is a travel agent in Wollongong; he believes that digitalisation is good. According to him," It is a good move because people often forget the physical licence. I can see everything will be linked in future like your car's details and renewal service etc. so overall it is a good move."

He also added that"  there are some questions need to be answered like will the digital licence be valid internationally? Do we need to have it all the time on the phone and what happens when your phone battery dies, or you forget your phone at home?"

59 years old Taruna Raval dislikes this step. She said, " we have to understand that Australia still has  70 percent, aged people. Many of my friends and I do not like, or we are not smartphone friendly people. I forget my licence many times, but still, I do not think the digital licence is a good way to go."

She suggested, " why can't we have everything linked to the car number plate?"
