Gladys Berejiklian began her career as a Commonwealth Bank executive. Now, Gladys Berejiklian has been elected unopposed to become the leader of the NSW Liberal party and the state’s Premier.
Her colleagues believe her authenticity will be the key to connecting with voters as premier, after years of favouring diligent work too conspicuously building a profile.
She was the daughter of a welder and nurse who came to Australia from Jerusalem and Syria in the 1960s. She was not shy in speaking English in her childhood.
Friends describe her as a disciplined person. She starts her day by reading ministerial briefings and frequently reads her emails.
She is also a family person. She spends Sundays with her family.
She made her name as transport minister, once thought to be the cursed portfolio of NSW politics.
Ms Berejiklian will be sworn in as the 45th Premier of NSW in the afternoon. The full cabinet of the Berejiklian government will be announced at a later time.
