The social network for professionals, LinkedIn is adding a service that provides members with pay information for a variety of jobs.

The members can compare or understand salary potential considering some factors like location, industry, education and experience.

LinkedIn says the new feature can be useful for job-seekers as well as workers who might want to negotiate a raise from their current employer.

The new service is free and promises to go beyond more generic salary tools - offered by other job sites - by combining sophisticated computer analysis with the most up-to-date information gleaned from workers, labour reports, and other sources.

The "LinkedIn Salary" feature is initially available in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. LinkedIn launched this tool with data from 1 million professionals. It may not have data for every job,  but the service will improve as more people participate. It recently began offering training suggestions for workers.

Microsoft has recently bought LinkedIn for $26 billion.
