The Australian Government’s Department of Education and Training is currently reviewing the skilled migration program’s Skilled Occupation’s List, an annual process which involves flagging occupations for future removal.

Following the advice provided last year, 52 occupations were flagged for removal in future years (full list below).

“Generally, occupations are flagged when there is emerging evidence of excess supply in the labour market,” the department says.

The current list of 183 occupations is used to determine the eligibility for Australia’s permanent skilled migration scheme.

A separate, longer list – the Consolidated Skilled Occupation List – exists for temporary migrant workers under the 457 visa scheme.

The occupations flagged for removal range from ‘Accountant’ to ‘Chef’, ‘Barrister’ to ‘Cardiologist’.

The department takes a number of factors into account when determining the list, including demand, supply, time needed for training and education, and the risk to the economy if there’s a skills shortage.

“For each shortlisted occupation, analysis of labour market, education, immigration and economic data is undertaken to assess if the occupation would benefit from skilled migration,” the department says.

The department normally submits its advice to the Immigration Minister in March, with the final list to take effect on July 1 next year.
