Returning Australians and permanent residents could soon be quarantining in the comfort of their own homes - and saving thousands on hotel fees. In South Australia, authorities are trialling new technology for police stay at home orders. But there are concerns the largely untested software - which uses facial recognition – could mistakenly identify people from some ethnic groups.

Highlights

  • A new app developed by the South Australian Government to monitor home quarantine could be the key to bringing more people home.
  • The app uses biometric technology to confirm a users’ identity and geo-tracking to map their location.
  • Civil libertarians say the new technology should be underpinned by strong legislation.
