Doctor's tips on how to use My Health records

Until now you could choose to participate in the electronic health database initiated by the Australian Government. But with recent changes since July 2018, your details are being automatically added to My Health records unless you specifically ask to be removed from the database. How are health professionals using your data? What can you do to protect your details? Here are Dr Bhaumik Shah's tips on how to use My Health records.


  • Choose your password carefully.
  • Avoid accessing the system on public WiFi.
  • My Health Record system enables the user to block access to sensitive information using the Restricted Access Code.
  • You can set an email or SMS alert which will let you know whenever your records are accessed.
  • Any unauthorized access will be treated as a criminal activity. 
The record system gives the right to nominate a person who can take decisions on behalf of the patient during an emergency situation.
