The fate of United States president Donald Trump's nominee for a crucial vacancy on the nation's Supreme Court hangs in the balance after a harrowing day of hearings in the US senate. At the centre of whether the 53-year-old judge Brett Kavanaugh proceeds to the highest court in the land is a woman's allegation he sexually assaulted her at a party in 1982.
