Australians often believe they are quite progressive in their views about traditional gender roles at home and work, but new research shows the reality is vastly different.

Household Income and Labour Dynamics report shows:

  • Women are doing on average seven more hours than men a week, and that increases once they have children, with mums taking on 65 percent of the housework and 63 percent of child care.
  • Nearly 70 percent  women have a post-school qualification in 2016 compared to just 42 percent in 2001.
  • The report also reveals a gap between men and women in financial literacy. Putting the sexes to the test, about 50 percent of men correctly answered five financial questions compared with just 35 percent of female respondents.
